Founder or the method is Francine Shapiro. The letters standing for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (desensitization and reprocessing via bilateral stimulation). The method combines many elements from effective psychotherapeutic approaches (Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, psychodynamic, somatic therapy etc.).

The goal is to reprocess past stressful or traumatic events, which lead often to dysfunctional symptoms in one’s everyday life. Then with the guidance of the therapist, you might go into resolving and reprocessing problematic situations that occur today, and trigger beliefs, emotions and bodily emotions. During a session, the patient focuses on bilateral stimulation while thinking of the traumatic or stressful event.
